Sjögren's Syndrome Medications
The prescription medications available to treat dry eyes and dry mouth are listed here, but there are other treatments available over the counter to treat symptoms and other prescription medications, such as hydroxychloroquine sulfate (Plaquenil) to treat other manifestations. Special chewing gum, mouth sprays and rinses can help moisten the mouth and lessen discomfort. Eye drops can be used as needed and are available without prescription. The drugs listed here work internally either to help your body produce more moisture in the mouth or to trap any existing moisture on the eye. A surgical procedure to block the tear ducts is an option for severe cases.
Other measures you can take on your own include sipping water throughout the day, avoiding smoking and caffeine and talking with your doctor about any medications you may be currently taking that could be drying your mucous membranes.
